Switchboard Upgrade
A switchboard upgrade is one of the most significant improvements you can make to your property’s electrical safety and capability. Homes built before 1990 were designed for a fraction of the load a modern household places on them: ceramic fuse boards with no RCD protection, single 60-amp mains connections and circuits sized for a world without ducted air conditioning, EV chargers or solar inverters.
Focus Group Electrical replaces outdated boards with modern DIN-rail distributions fitted with correctly rated circuit breakers, Type A RCDs on all circuits and appropriately sized mains connections. Every upgrade is documented with a CCEW, and every circuit is tested before we leave.

No TEST buttons on your switchboard means no RCD protection anywhere on your circuits. Type A RCDs are required on all new and modified circuits, and landlords are required to have safety switches on all power circuits in NSW tenancies. We fit them and test the trip time on every circuit.

Ceramic fuse carriers, frequent unexplained tripping and overloaded circuits are the clearest signs an upgrade is overdue. We arrange the temporary power disconnection with Ausgrid or Endeavour Energy, upgrade the board and mains, and restore power with all circuits confirmed operational before we leave.

Properties adding solar, EV chargers or high-draw appliances all require a switchboard assessment before connection. Solar and EV charger circuits specifically require Type A (or Type B for three-phase EV) RCDs. We assess this as part of every solar and EV charger quote at no charge.

We provide fixed written quotes after a free on-site assessment. The scope varies by property: the number of circuits, the main switch rating required, whether the board is single or three-phase, and whether additional wiring work is needed all affect the final quote.
Most residential single-phase switchboard upgrades are completed in a single working day, from supply disconnect through to final circuit testing and CCEW issue. Three-phase upgrades or boards in complex locations may take two days.
Yes. A temporary power disconnection is required to safely remove and replace the switchboard. We coordinate this with your electricity distributor and aim to restore power by the end of the working day.
Not always, but your board must be assessed first. If it has spare capacity, Type A RCDs and an adequately rated main switch, modification may not be required. Boards with ceramic fuses, Type AC switches or insufficient capacity must be upgraded first.
Yes. A switchboard upgrade is regulated electrical work under the NSW Electricity (Consumer Safety) Act 2004. We issue your CCEW the same day the upgrade is completed.
